The other day I attended a lecture about the findings of a MOOC on Careers and Employability Skills. MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course, and this one was run by the University of London International Programme. 157,396 registered for the course from 204 countries. Wow, that just demonstrates how interested we all are in self-managing our careers.

We live in an era where the onus is on us to take charge of our progression – and to constantly review where we are heading and how. Tapping into this enormous sample of students and working individuals revealed some interesting facts.

The fact that particularly caught my eye related to the question: “How did you find your last job?”

The leading response was “Network” and it scored 45%. While “Responding to a general vacancy” only scored 12%.
